Are creepy dolls hanging from trees unsettling enough for a game? Well, looking at Steelkrill Studio’s upcoming horror game, my answer is yes. The studio behind the NYX Award-winning horror game The Backrooms 1998 has revealed Where Dolls Hang, a new psychological survival horror game.
You play as a detective investigating a series of disappearances inside a living forest. The forest is completely overrun with mannequins, puppets, and other unnatural figures. The investigation eventually becomes personal when clues start pointing toward the disappearance of the detective’s own daughter.
In Where Dolls Hang, you spend the time examining bodies, investigating crime scenes, and placing evidence markers. You also photograph clues with an in-game camera system and even put bodies into body bags.
The forest is a major part of the horror. The wilderness is filled with forest trails, flooded swamps, hidden waterways, and isolated locations. You can also use boats to travel through flooded regions and navigate waterways that lead to areas cut off from the main map.
There are dynamic weather systems, adaptive threats, survival mechanics, and a full day-and-night cycle. Weather directly affects gameplay, including visibility, stealth, and enemy behaviour. Rain can make it harder to see what’s around you, but it also has the advantage of making it harder for monsters to hear you.
Where Dolls Hang also features puzzles, hidden clues, and scattered VHS tapes that reveal pieces of the story. You manage inventory space using a grid-based inventory system where every slot matters.
Where Dolls Hang is launching on PC later this year. You can wishlist it on Steam now.
